Goodbye iPhone, hello HTC Hero

HTC Hero

The sexy beast itself.

Gone from one giant to another, from Apple to Google. I have disliked my iPhone for a while and really needed to get a smart phone that can actually perform all my needs to a somewhat high standard. With my excitement 12 months ago with ordering the iPhone, changing my o2 tariff and joining modern technology in the phone department, it lasted for a good few months until I started using it as a mobile phone. The few, but irritating, problems that are present in texting and calling (or receiving calls) from contacts is just off-putting.

I guess I could have been expecting too much from the iPhone itself, being my first smart phone, but with all the hype and positive reviews, remarks and comments from the public you would expect it to perform really well and just work.

I don’t think it is demanding to have a phone that satisfies all your needs and performs well as a mobile platform. For example, this is what I need and want in a smart phone:

  • Call people and send text messages etc., simple communications.
  • Perform well as a music player.
  • Allow me to browse the Internet quickly and easily.
  • Have my mail synchronized and viewable.
  • Able to customize the phone to suit my needs there and then.
  • Last long, the battery needs to be able to go for a few hours at least under heavy load.
  • Needs to look good.

National Rail app FAIL

I was traveling back to Southend from London a while back and was on my way to the station. I whipped out my iPhone and went onto the National Rail application to check times and if there are any delays (this app really is worth the £5 in saving you trouble with delays, cancellations etc.). I found this:

National Rail App Fail

Before you begin thinking, no it ain’t an edited picture or me trying to be funny. That is genuinely what was the output on the screen and what made me giggle quietly to myself. So missing 5 stations due to unforeseen events (actually, even Fenchurch Street is cancelled) will save 13 hours on a line with only two tracks with many services running within those 13 hours so it would have to wait for the earlier trains to actually get to their destinations? I see! Then it goes from being early to being 15 hours late. I think it’s worth some chuckling at :)

Disclaimer: Obviously it’s a simple error of the time stamp on West Horndon being set to 00:00 ;)

Sucked into the XBOX 360

Yes I am now a pawn in the Microsoft empire, wasn’t I already? I mean, they had me naked serving Windows 7 hot dogs with mustard I am that pleased with it. In all seriousness, I needed a games console, something to fill any spare time I have. It was always out of the Wii or the 360 but I just couldn’t have a Wii, I mean why would I want to stand there flicking the controller around like a fairy on my own if I don’t have friends round that day?

Traygon123 Gamertag

My gamertag is Traygon123, if you have XBOX Live then add me, and yes I can advertise my profile on here as it’s my blog! I am normally found shouting and ranting on Halo 3 or being a soar loser on Halo Wars, haven’t really ventured online in any other game just yet.

Apple and Microsoft are Terrible

All this talk of one set of fan boys arguing against another since the beginning of time is just starting to get irritating, especially when both sides are completely wrong. Is Microsoft better? No. Is Apple superior? No. Let me explain the day I have had with trouble from both sides, pathetic problems that shouldn’t even be present.

Windows 7

Okay, so this Operating System is okay, apart from the fact that I received four BSOD’s (Blue Screen of Death) yesturday and today it seems to want to keep bugging me to restart my machine and install updates, which of course… fail. When I do have a chance to actually do something on the machine I get notifications of files being ready to burn to a disc. I haven’t copied any files to be burned to a blank CD and when I go the built-in burning feature (which is crap in itself), it’s blank!

Windows Media Player

I don’t know who oversees the development over at MHQ, but this person must have been either stoned or pissed out their face when he or she approved and released this bad boy into the world. Not only has it got a ridiculous interface, terrible track sorting and not being able to have your songs in a nice tight list is just beyond belief. Importing music? No problem… wait! Where is the import feature? Oh so I need to go and select a destination for music to be automatically updated? Sounds good to me! I’ll leave it there for 5 minutes to update the library.
