RuneScape Moderators

Who? Who are Moderators? I have only ever seen 2, out a total of 3 years on and off game play addiction. I find that quite disturbing, I’d like to see at least one per week. I have also read reports and complaints that they ignore beginners sometimes with their somewhat annoying questions.

I was always under the impression Moderator had certain duties, one being to help new (or experienced) players with questions an always remain unbiased & friendly. I believe I am correct in thinking Moderators need to:

  • uphold all RuneScape and Jagex rules in-game.make sure that nothing and no one disrupts the enjoyment of any player.
  • answer reports as quickly as possible and get to the location of a situation immediately.
  • always put other players before their own playability.
  • always remain friendly to everyone no matter what and help others.

But they are meant to enjoy to game too? That is true to a degree, but being a Moderator is a privilege an they can easily say they don’t want the perks of being one if it is distracting and time consuming.

How to become one?

Well here’s the secret, by everyone’s surprise you can’t get the status by simply asking/pleaing or requesting the privilege. You need to play RuneScape as a good and honest player, have no black marks against your name, help other players, report annoying rule breaking kids and offenders etc.

That’s only a few tips on how to be remotely considered, but no one knows exactly what Jagex look for in a player, you need to try and compare between being a forum Moderator and one in the game.

  • Must be friendly and helpful to all other players, especially in welcoming beginners.
  • Must respond to any and all outstanding reports as soon as possible to ensure the enjoyment of honest players is not hindered.
  • Must be able to communicate with players, have fun with them in skilling, quests or mini-games.
  • Set an example, one must be able to represent being a RuneScape moderator well by leading others in creating a better community.
  • Must be able to solve situations and be unbiased through any report.

omg! sounds sooo awsme!!!

Okay, stop right there. It isn’t fun, it isn’t supposed to be. This is a serious position in which one has the responsibility of upholding rules and dealing with trouble makers at the expense of your game enjoyment. There will be situations when you just wish you never took up the job and other times you are relieved you did.

Would you like to be one?

I am not going to say no, that would be telling a porky pie. Though the chances are low, I regard myself as a
Worthy candidate with experience in forum/site moderation, I’m a mature, full time working 19 year old, I have good communication skills and can uphold the in-game law.

But would I want to sacrifice my enjoyment of the game itself? Maybe not, but to clear put RuneScape of all the kids, offenders and just players that strive on annoying people, I wouldn’t mind loosing some time making money ;)

Do you want to be a moderator? How do you feel the current moderators are performing?

Using blogs on forums

Many of you most likely have some sort of blog or personal website, have you ever thought of having a blog on your forum?

Blog Benefits

Installing Wordpress on your forum can be a fantastic way to capture potential members, get some good quality content, gain guest input without having to register on your board, it is a fantastic CMS and more. Some good advantages of having a Wordpress installation are listed below:

  • A great CMS :: Wordpress is a fantastic content management system, it is very easy to update, manage and extend it’s usability through themes and plug-ins.
  • It’s free :: Free?! That’s what your looking for! Many Administrators wish to keep costs down on forums until they know their board is going to be a success, well Wordpress costs absolutely nothing.
  • Plug-ins & Themes :: There is an incredible range of themes and plug-ins to choose from, thanks to a fantastic vibrant community backing the software.
  • Good content :: The content posted on the blog can be news about the forum, software updates, forum news or competitions. You can even do some press releases for software or other forums, the possibilities of range of the content is entirely up to your imagination (and chosen niche of course).
  • SEO friendly :: The Wordpress software itself is very good with Search Engines, the content is easily published and is trusted with authority when linked to. You can also easily change your permanent URL’s and more in the settings.

With all the points listed above, a real rummage around their official website and taking a browse at other websites I am certain you can see that having Wordpress on your forum can (if done correctly) improve your site’s usability greatly.

Things to remember

You have to take a few things into consideration when planning this attachment to your ship of communities. First of all, you must have your own web server, your own domain and able to have Wordpress installed. Having a free forum, then having a blog on wordpress.com (or Blogger etc.) will just look too external and spread out. It is much better to have all your site sections in one spot, the web is big remember ;)

Secondly, never, ever, ever post up duplicate content! This isn’t the best idea at all when blogging, so it wont change when adding some posts to your site, keep the content unique to your forum, if you do take an external source and post about it, be sure to link back!

Lastly, you can do some publishing to help get some noticability on the net, submiting your articles to directories, commenting on other blogs in the same niche, submit your blog to blog specific directories and create a neat blog roll.

RuneScape lost it’s ‘fun’?

This could be quite a contradictory, yet debatable topic. Has RuneScape lost it’s fun factor?

No I’m not on about the features, quests, skills, game play or combat being boring, nor am I complaining that there aren’t enough mini-games, or random events. I am merely pointing out a straight up opinion (shared by others in the RS community), that the incredibly popular browser game might be loosing it’s enjoyment factor.

Hardcore ‘Skilling’

This well could be the problem, or the main cause of the problem. Players aren’t focusing on mini-games, player interactions, PvP, clans, quests, role playing, enjoying the skills, exploration or any other feature that RuneScape as a game offers. Instead, the mass craving for getting to level 99 in that particular skill to obtain a cape displaying your awesomeness. That is all good and well, especially if you enjoy the skill day in and day out, but what happens when you get that skill to the maximum level after a few months? You go onto the next, then the next and so on.

To me, this is extremely boring, spending hours a day for months, even a year, gaining levels to their maximum status is not really enjoying the game, nor is it getting the most out of the playability. Thus being said, more players have a slight chance in really getting bored from this mass skill leveling and leave the game. Take my character for example, I am a level 73 combat melee with a total level of 905, I take each day step by step and enjoy the game and the skills.

Still have kids?

I thought RuneScape had gotten rid of all the kids in the game and started to apply more mature players throughout the world. However, I was dumbstruck and be founded by what I found at the Gnome Stronghold. An immature, annoying, rule breaking, disruptive 12 year old kid that was calling me a noob because he is level 99 in woodcutting and I am only at a mere level 63, I of course kept telling him to grow up and stop annoying other players due to him not gaining any respect from players.

I dont care wat u think! lmao noob

Having already disrupted my enjoyment of that night (after a day at work), he thought it would be funny to follow me to each Yew tree that I chose to cut down and compete with me, he has a Dragon Hatchet opposed to my basic Rune counterpart, yet I was still getting a few good loads of logs as well as him, which he of course, didn’t find amusing. At this point in time,
